Satori Staff
Here is a partial list of staff that worked at
Satori Camp during the summer of 2003. For more detailed bios,

Directors:

Mike
Cantlon - Satori Camp Co-founder and Co-director. Mike
is a teacher for Spokane School District 81's gifted education
program. He is also an adjunct faculty member of the Education
Department at Eastern Washington University.
- Dr. Bruce Mitchell - Satori Camp Co-founder and Co-director.
Dr. Mitchell is a retired professor for Eastern Washington University's
Department of Education. He is a noted researcher and author in
areas of creativity, gifted education and multicultural education.
- *Sara Maleki
- Satori Camp Assistant Director. Sara has been with the camp
for ten of its twenty years: first as a camper, then as a counselor,
and now as Assistant Director. She is a graduate of EWU and holds
a B.A. in Business MIS.
Counselors
- Satori Camp counselors are predominantly certified teachers
and students currently in an education program. We also have several
former campers who have worked their way into camp counsellor
positions through our Counsellor-in-Training (CIT)
program.
Instructors
- Satori class instructors come from backgrounds as diverse as
the classes they teach. Most are area professionals and experts
in their field, as well as Junior and Senior High School teachers
and Eastern Washington University professors.

- Professional dance teacher and drama instructor at WWU; performs
with the Dead Parrots Society group.
- *Marcus Collins - Graduate student in the Biophysics
Group of the Physics Department at Cornell University.
- *Nathan Collins
- Graduate student in Physics at MIT; Editor of MIT’s student
newspaper, The Tech.
- Tammy Hovren - AP/Honors English teacher and
Diversity Advisor in the East Valley School District. MA in Curriculum
Development from Eastern Washington University.
- John Hagney - Teacher in Spokane School District
81; adjunct faculty at SFCC and EWU; 1997 Presidential Scholar
Distinguished Teacher.
- Dr. Sidney Kasuga - Professor of Biology at
Eastern Washington University; Specialist in immunopathology and
hematopathology.
- Jeff Kent - Teacher for Spokane School District
81; currently serving on the Spokane Arts Commission.
- Jim Kershner - Humor columnist for the Spokesman
Review. Received seven awards from the National Society of Newspaper
Columns. Taught humor writing with the National Writing Project.
- Heather McKean - Senior Associate Faculty in
the Department of Biology, Eastern Washington University. MS in
Biology/Genetics.
- *Chris Mathieson
- in Cognitive Science at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver,
Canada; Chief Editor of the Canadian Undergraduate Journal of
Cognitive Science.
- Bruce McDavis - 6th Degree black belt in Goju-ryu
Karate; has been teaching karate since 1975 throughout the Inland
Northwest.
- John Shields - Instructional Technologist II
in the Department of Biology, Eastern Washington University. MS
in Biology/Ecology.
- Lynnae Sowers
- BA and MED from Eastern Washington University. Field experience
in excavation. Research and numerous presentations involving anthropology
and archaeology ethnobotany.
- Mark Tietjen - Director of Orchestra and Assistant
Director of Bands in the East Valley School District. BA in Music
Education and MA in Percussion Performance from Eastern Washington
University.
- Sharon Wucherpfennig - Breakfast/Pastry Chef
at the Stephanie Inn dining room in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Professional
cake decorator for 8 years.
- Bill Williams - Professor in the Department
of Psychology at Eastern Washington University.
- *Brannon Zahand
- Software Test Lead in Microsoft’s Xbox Division and is
an avid console/computer gamer.
