Satori Staff
Here is a partial list of staff that will be
working at Satori Camp during the summer of 2007.

denotes a Satori Camp Alumni)
Directors:

Mike
Cantlon - Satori Camp cofounder and codirector. Mike
is a teacher for the Spokane School District 81’s gifted
education program. He is also an adjunct faculty member of the
Education Department at Eastern Washington University.
- Dr. Bruce Mitchell - Satori
Camp cofounder and codirector. Dr. Mitchell is a retired professor
from Eastern Washington University’s Department of Education.
He is a noted researcher and author in areas of creativity, gifted
education and multicultural education.
- *Sara Maleki - Satori Camp assistant
director. Sara has been with the camp for more than half of its
years: first as a camper, then as a counselor and now as assistant
director. She is working toward earning her Juris Doctorate at
Gonzaga University School of Law.
Counselors
Satori Camp counselors are predominantly certified
teachers and students currently in an education program. We also
have several former campers who have worked their way into camp
counsellor positions.
Instructors
Satori class instructors come from backgrounds as
diverse as the classes they teach. Most are area professionals and
experts in their field, as well as Junior and Senior High School
teachers and Eastern Washington University professors.
Featured instructors include:
- *Matthew Buchholtz - A graduate
from the University of Washington with a degree in cinema studies,
now living in Los Angeles.
- *Tyler Burnet - A former Satori
camper, a professional dance instructor and actor working in Chicago,
Illinois.
- *Jen Hegel - Earned her BA in
psychology from Eastern Washington University with a gender studies
certificate. Now studying psychology as a graduate student
- *Ashley Cantlon - Graduate of
the University of Portland, working as an engineer.
- *Marcus Collins - Graduate student
in the Biophysics Group of the Physics Department at Cornell University.
- *Nathan Collins - Graduate student
in political science at Stanford University.
- Tammy Hovren - AP/Honors English
teacher and diversity advisor in the East Valley School District.
MA in curriculum development from Eastern Washington University.
- John Hagney - Teacher in Spokane
School District 81, adjunct faculty at SFCC and EWU; 1997 Presidential
Scholar Distinguished Teacher.
- Pat Hagney - Art teacher for
School District 81.
- Dr. Sidney Kasuga - Professor
of biology at Eastern Washington University and specialist in
immunopathology and hematopathology.
- Jeff Kent - Art and yearbook
teacher for White Swan High School, currently serving on the Spokane
Arts Commission.
- *Olivia Knouff - A recent graduate
of Arizona State University holding dual degrees in biology and
biochemistry. She has fenced with ASU’s Salle Diablo Fencing
Club for the past 4 years, during which she served as president,
vice president, and Women’s Sabre Team captain, and participated
in individual and team intercollegiate competitions.
- Joseph Kuhlman - Has a BS in
criminology and psychology from East Tennessee State University
and is currently pursuing his Juris Doctorate at Gonzaga School
of Law.
- *Chris Mathieson - Museum Programmer
at the Vancouver Police Centennial Museum. Also works as a science
educator at the Choice School for Gifted Children and is vice
president of the Gifted Children’s Association of British
Columbia.
- Bruce McDavis - Sixth degree
black belt in Gojuryu Karate and has been teaching karate since
1975 throughout the Inland Northwest.
- Cheryl-Anne Millsap - A columnist
as well as the home and garden editor at The Spokesman- Review
in Spokane, Washington. Her personal column, Home Planet, appears
each Monday on the cover of the Today section and her column on
antiques and collectibles appears in the Home section each Tuesday.
- *Emily Powell - Graduate of
the Middlebury College Pre-Architecture pre-professional program
with a BA in Italian and history of art and architecture, studied
for a year abroad at the Universiti degli Studi di Ferrara.
- Courtney Rowland - A student
at Arizona State University, where she studies math education
and Japanese. She traveled to Japan on a cultural exchange in
2003, and plans to live and teach there after graduating from
college.
- Mark Tietjen - Director of orchestra
and assistant director of bands in the Central Valley School District.
BA in music education and MA in percussion performance from Eastern
Washington University.
- Bill Williams - Professor of
psychology at Eastern Washington University.
