Sunday
Satori Camp 2002 starts. All campers and many parents gathered
for the opening meeting, where campers met live-in resident, Bob
the Fern, and we went to dinner. Then all campers trooped back
into the evening activity for the night, Satori Orientation and
meeting other campers in groups, plus a tour of the campus for
classes the next morning. This is when campers traveling in the
elevators first met Pubert, the elevator ghost.
Monday
Classes started after breakfast. Some campers provided more than
enough time to allow them to find their classes. Reports of lost
campers on the campus were given. After the morning and midday
sessions, all members of Satori went to lunch, quickly chatting
with their friends about classes, and oggling over their third
meal. Afternoon classes came and went, and campers rushed to the
Jim Black climbing rock, where they posed for a group picture
with their butts being fried on the rocks, then to the recreational
activities. Then to dinner, and after that, Capture the Flag.
The red team won two games, and the yellow team won one. Campers
socialized after the first busy day of the week and then plopped
sleepily into bed.
Tuesday
Another normal day at Satori started, with bouncy sausages and
pancakes. This author found it EXTREMELY hard to actually poke
the sausage with a fork, and eventually gave up after it bounced
off her plate. Morning classes began, while students, tired after
their first full day, yawned their way in. Midday too, and soon
lunch started. After dinner and some free time, campers went to
the Mystery Activity, which was Skit Night. After a surprise visit
from Christina Aguilera and a quick performance of "Genie
in a Bottle," the skits continued, ranging from an e-coli
sketch, to a Fear Factor episode, in which many were killed (but
none were hurt in the actual making.) Then, people trudged to
their rooms, only to hear certain tunes coming from a small lobby
area on the fifth floor, which turned out to be a sort of concert,
featuring guitars and a synthesizer, both being performed at different
times.
Wednesday
Birthdays of Mike and Chris! Classes proceeded as usual, with
the breakfast and lunch intervals. By the afternoon class, almost
all of the campers had found out about the cheerleaders who had
moved into Streeter Hall. Then, campers had a brief free time,
before a quick meeting. Mike allowed everyone to go and change
into their outfits, and then a crowd proceeded to the PUB for
the Medieval Feast. There was wonderful food and dancing. Campers
went back to the dorms and hung out, discovering the cheerleaders,
and some listened to Michaela Alden perform a few of her songs.
Then almost half of the camp ran quickly down to the TV room on
the first floor to watch Mike and Chris on FOX 28 News, talking
about Satori.
Thursday
Campers slowly came into the PUB, stating their disbelief and
dismay that camp would almost be over. They also talked about
their excitement for the dance. Classes went like always, with
lunch in between, and then dinner. Anxious campers stuffed themselves,
and worried campers could barely get anything down. It was quite
a sight to be on the girl's floor, where many ran around talking
with their friends, and preparing for the dance at the same time.
Then after a quick meeting in the girl's "lobby," and
filling out of a survey, they proceeded downstairs to a mix of
oldies, newies, and techno dance tunes. In the middle was a Jimi
Hendrix tribute for Mike, who danced in the middle of a crowd
for two Jimi songs. At the end, the dancers all ripped down the
beautiful decorations with joy, and posed for millions of pictures.
Friday
Campers came into breakfast just like it was a normal day. But
it wasn't. Today is the last day of Satori Camp 2002. Among breakfast
conversations were the dance, the disbelief that we would be leaving
soon, and the usual topics. Again, Grace Chapin molded a beautiful
"mealtime creation." Anyways, it's been a great year,
and I speak for all at the Satori Harold when I say that we hope
you all had fun, and we'll see you next year.
