The following story was written for the Satori
Camp Humor Writing class. The Harold makes no claims as to the
newsworthiness of the following piece of writing, but we do
guarantee it'll be good for a chuckle or two.
I was staying with some friends for a few
days and they own a little burger joint in town. I had applied
for a job there several weeks ago, before my 15th birthday.
My friend Brittney needed help opening in the morning because
the night crew didn’t finish the cleaning. So at nine in the
morning, I was helping make a few breakfast foods and a number
of drinks. By noon, a rush had overwhelmed us and her mom, Jan,
came in to cook. I was a little worried and running frantically,
like a puppy dog chasing its tail. I wanted to make a good impression
and land a job, but while trying to make no mistakes, Brittney
was dieing because she was laughing so hard at me and my craziness.
They put me in charge of drinks to start with. “Here’s where
we mark ‘em, here’s where you make ‘em,” said Brittney. I made
several shakes right away. About the first five of them were
overflowed. I made more and started getting better… eventually!
At one point, I had just filled a large Coke and was going to
put the lid on and Brittney comes around the corner and slams
into me. Coke went all over me, the floor, the counter. I went
to get a rag and wiped it up, but when I went to wash the rag
out, I splashed myself with water and was soaked! Water was
all down my pants like I wet myself, and Coke covered my tummy.
I gave up on drinks.
Next, Brittney moved me to window phone taking
orders and totalling them. NIGHTMARE! My day had gone bad enough.
I was being a major blonde and had trouble when I was just adding
$1.17 and $.97. I gave up!
On to fries and fried food. The best part!
Soon after I switched to fries everyone was mentioning how great
they were. Jan and Brittney soon took breaks to grab one of
my now-famous large fries munch it down quickly. I got “AAHs!”
and “OOHs!” While Jan was on a break, Brittney and I had a talk.
“Well you know, since the fries are so great and I’ve been working
with you all day, you’re gonna have to chat with your mom.”
I pleaded around 6:30pm that evening when the nightshift had
finally taken over, Jan turned to me and said… “Lindsey, after
you get back from camp, we’re going to have a talk. Sound good?”
She winked at me and I nodded my head with a great big smile.
So what I thought was one of the worst days of my life turned
out to be not that bad after all, with a large fry on the side.
