This year's Paradox of Power class is something
entirely new here at Satori.
Taught by John Hagney, a teacher and adjunct
faculty at EWU, the class aims to explore the “present policy”
of the United States on terrorism, according to the class description
While it is impossible to cover all possible
areas of U.S. policy for this class, Hagney said he has chosen
to take the “central, major issues” so that his students may
better understand government policies and the issue of terrorism
in the United States and abroad.
Hagney said that he wished for his students
to “Understand the … issues that that have emerged since 9/11.”
This seems like a hard-to-reach goal, but the students are absorbing
information easily.
The
class has discussed such topics as airport security, the USA
Patriot Act, and President Bush's wartime policy. Hagney has
also arranged for a government official to visit the class so
they can ask questions and further their get a view of policy.
On the whole students feel that Hagney is
well-informed and wants his students to understand the issues
surrounding America's governmental policies. Reed Jessen, a
student in the class, said today’s speaker, U.S. Attorney James
A. McDevitt, was “excellent.”
Some students feel that they are not able
to talk as much as they would like. Claire Topalian, a first
year camper, said she “Thought it would be more debate, and
that’s what I was expecting.”
