Red
won the first game, and the second game ended in a draw, but
many will agree that it was the injuries and the sprinklers
that conquered all in Capture the Flag.
The list of reported injuries was long. Peter
Clearly reported being bitten by another camper. Sam Tupper
hurt his ankles when he was captured, and Claire Topalian was
cut on the wrist.
At one point, the sprinklers on the red side
just went off, drenching an entire jail full of red prisoners.
Courtney Freeman, from the red team, said, “This is a lot of
fun, and the sprinklers just went off. Red is going to win!”
Both teams began the game in the same way,
by planting decoy flags to confuse their opponents. This tactic
worked so well that many of the campers didn’t know where their
own flags were located.
In the first game the red team’s hiding strategy
was simple. Everyone on that team ran away from a huddle pretending
to have the flag stuff up their shirts. After that, everyone
pretended to hide the flag.
Many jail breaks were attempted. In the first game, Zachary
Gillam-Powell, from the yellow team, made an attempt to free
prisoners from the jail. He was stopped feet from the jail.
Also in the first game, Claire Topalian made an attempt to free
yellow prisoners. She was successful, and brought a prisoner
with her across to safety.
In the second game, Christopher Borriello
made an attempt to free red prisoners. He was unsuccessful.
In the first game the yellow team’s strategy was to attack the
red team in an all-out rush in hopes of overwhelming the red
team.
The red team’s strategy was to play a good
defense and capture yellow team members as they came across.
Once the yellow team was deprived of players, the red team rushed,
with Jesse Reed grabbed the flag and a red team victory.
In
the second game, Emory Brinkman, of the yellow team, said, “Only
three people on our team know where the flag is.” The yellow
team adopted the same strategy as the red team, but sent many
of their teammates to rescue their captive comrades in the red
jail. The yellow team almost captured the flag, but the capturer
ran out of bounds.
At one point, red team members suspected
that the yellow flag had been hidden illegally. These suspicions
later turned out to be incorrect.
The yellow team freed many prisoners near
the end of the second game, and it appeared as if they would
win, but the match ended in a draw.
The game, an annual event at Satori for as
long as anyone can remember, was played yesterday evening on
the lawn in front of Showalter Hall.
