Sweltering heat and unequally equipped dorms
troubled many Satori campers. While some were refreshed and
cool, others were trapped in the evening heat, with only small
fans to cool them off.
Twenty-six dorm rooms have air conditioning
but forty-one rooms live without, including counselor Jackie
Lyons on the second floor. Kate Collins is a resident in a non-conditioned
room and said, “It gets really hot at night and it took me a
long time for me to get to sleep last night.” Her roommate Rachel
Garner said, “If you have a fan it really doesn’t matter.” Farther
down the hall, Anne Johnson replied that, “The AC is good but
it doesn’t go high enough.” “I find it to be a nuisance,” said
Maig Tinnin. Most campers agree that they would rather have
air conditioning than none at all.
Some of the campers here at Satori find the
beds to be hard and uncomfortable. Paige Soles said, “The mattresses
suck!” Bedding and sheets are not available for each camper
to use so most of them only have their sleeping bag for padding.
One of the pleasures of living in the dorms
is having lots of space to store everything a camper needs.
Max Cho said, “The bureau is good but I don’t use the closet.”
Some campers like linoleum and some like
carpet. Most prefer the carpet because it isn’t hard and it’s
doesn’t get cold in the morning. Wilford Eitema-Pang said, “I
prefer carpet because then I wouldn’t have slipped on the water
I spilled.” Monica Jensen said, “I don’t like and I do like
it…the carpet (is) hard but it’s better than having linoleum.”
