Yesterday’s
capture the flag game was the most exciting thing this week’s
campers have seen so far, featuring sprinklers for the second
year in a row and one game that ended in confusion.
Blue triumphed over red in the first game,
and the second victory was undecided, though the blue team suggested
that they won.
“I just hope it won’t be like last year with the sprinklers,”
said second-year camper Randi Wilson about the sprinkler incident.
Towards the end of the second game, the sprinklers
went off. Many campers ran around in the sprinklers and got
very wet, although some people didn’t like getting splashed
with the water. Second year camper Gracie Smith enjoyed running
through the sprinklers. “The sprinklers aren’t so much a problem,”
says Gracie. “They’re more of a challenging, fun, and wet obstacle.”
Tom Lyons, a game official, moved the jails
as a result of the sprinkler incident, causing some confusion.
Later in the first game, enthusiastic red team prisoners chanted
“R-E-D!” and, “Red! Red! Red!”
Then it was the blue’s turn for the chanting. The main chant
was, “What do we want? CANADA! When do we want it? YESTERDAY!
Why do we want it? MOOSE!”
“You’ve seen them, they’re majestic creatures!”
Erika Harder says. “I really think we’ve got something to say.
We’ve a voice that’s been oppressed for ten minutes. It’s time
to rise against the common denominator and bring our issues
to the front of the backburner.”
The small and what seemed to be harmless
game soon became a war. And that was only the first game.
In the beginning of the second game, the red team put their
flag right inside the out-of-bounds mark. One blue player tried
to run over to get it, but she soon realized that she was out-of-bounds
with it. There was some argument over the situation, angering
some campers.
Throughout most of the second game, the red
team had an advantage over the blue team because of the many
blue players that were captured. There were about three guards
stationed in front of the jail. There were a few complaints
of boredom from these guards, who said they really wanted to
take part in the real game. The blue team made many rescue attempts
which failed most of the time, adding even more blue players
to the prisoner count.
Second year Bryan Berry said he had a record
for his team. He captured three people, rescued two, grabbed
the flag for victory in the first game, and only got caught
once.
